Minnesota MicroNet ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY The Minnesota MicroNet Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) explains activities which are explicitly prohibited by customers using Minnesota MicroNet's network services. Engaging in any of these activities can be considered grounds for account termination. This list is by no means exhaustive and will be updated as necessary. Minnesota MicroNet reserves the right to determine what is acceptable use of our network. Our policies were designed with the following goals in mind: Ensure the security, reliability and performance of our network. Because our network is a shared resource, ensure fair and equitable distribution of resources for all customers. Encourage the responsible use of net resources, discouraging practices which degrade the usability of network resources and thus the value of Internet services. Preserve the privacy and security of individual users. We ask for your cooperation in adhering to the following policies so our network can run as fast and smoothly as possible for all that use it. DIALUP ACCOUNT POLICIES Unless you have a full-time dedicated account, your account is to be used interactively by you. Interactive use means the customer is actually sitting in front of his/her computer actively using our service. Please keep in mind that our network, as well as the phone line you use, is shared with other customers. We keep our network as available to customers as we possibly can (99.9% uptime; user-to-modem ratio of 10:1 or better), so that sharing is as painless as possible. Your cooperation in sharing system resources also helps maintain that availability. Disconnect when you aren't actively using your account. We have placed a cap of 200 hours on interactive accounts. If you need more than that, your account probably isn't being used interactively, or is being shared with others. There is an online tool linked on our home page that you can use to check your monthly usage. Multiple logins by the same username are not allowed. You are only allowed one connection per username at a time. Unattended logins are not allowed. Do not use programs to defeat our idle timer. Do not use autodialers to automatically reconnect. Do not line camp, use excessive amounts of connect time (i.e., greater than 200 hours per month) unless you have a dedicated line. Do not leave programs running unattended on our servers. Do not run servers (i.e., private Web, ftp, irc servers) unless your account is a dedicated account. GENERAL POLICIES: Your account must be used for lawful activities only. Beware of copyright violations. Do not attempt to hack, crack or probe other networks or other accounts. Do not post commercial web pages on personal websites. Do not post adult or highly offensive material to websites. Do not store credit card numbers on our network. E-MAIL POLICIES: Do not send out Unsolicited Commercial Email (UCE). Do not participate in spamming the Internet. Spamming is the sending of unsolicited bulk E-mail or mass postings or crossposting to newsgroups. Do not use your account to send bulk email, or to be used as the return address on bulk email. Do not use your account to harvest E-mail addresses. Do not post commercial messages to newgroups unless the group charter specifically allows commercial postings. Also, do not announce your website to newsgroups unless that is specifically allowed by the group charter. Do not post off-topic. Discuss ions which are not of general interest to the group should be taken offline and sent through E-mail. Do not forge mail addresses. Do not send chain letters. Do not send harassing email , whether through language, frequency, or size of messages. Do not send email to any person who does not wish to receive it. Do not spread computer viruses or any kind of Internet myth or hoax.
